In light of the economic bonanza that Cuba is beginning to experience, the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro made an appeal to have rationality prevail in whatever economic steps are taken on the island.
In a national radio and television address on Thursday, the Cuban president said that the Revolution has demonstrated it knows how to act speedily, but this time not only it knows how to do things speedily, but it knows how to do it with much higher quality, he noted.
Fidel made emphasis on the carefulness with which work will be done in the distribution of products, raw materials, consumer goods and other commodities purchased in Venezuela and worth 412 million dollars.
He insisted on the need that the hard currency stores keep their prices, so that the current rising trend of the Cuban peso purchasing power is kept , a goal that will not be achieved in a matter of days, he cautioned.
The Cuban leader pointed out that there are formulas to help low-income people, and he assured that there will come a time when salaries and prices perform the regulating role they need in society, although he noted that that moment is still distant.
The criteria to be followed will be that of distributing with rationality, because although products will be given out freely, their purchasing should be regulated.
If we do the right things -he said- the correct balance will be achieved, without reaching the communist formula of distribution, but without abandoning either the socialist formula of from each according to his ability, to each according to his work.
After affirming that Cubans, like never before, will learn of economic theory and practice, Fidel Castro said the emphasis will be put on things that are truly important, and that conditions are there to do so. These are the people that surprised the world with the May Day rally that overflowed Revolution Square, he recalled.
After announcing the imminent arrival of new vehicles to improve public transportation, Fidel Castro reiterated the need of systematizing a rigorous policy of saving, which will propel the progress of the nation.
There are great prospects of integration for Latin America and the Caribbean with the implementation of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA). The countries of the region know that we are not imperialists, and that we will really help them rid themselves of all the evils they inherited after centuries of exploitation.
The leader of the Cuban Revolution also focused on the various programs underway on the island, such as the refurbishing of 444 policlinics that will be equipped with top notch equipment for rehabilitation, physiotherapy, ultrasound and electrocardiogram services, and the creation of intensive care units in municipalities that may lack hospitals.
He pointed out that Cuba will have a hospital network of excellence that will cater to the 11.2 million Cubans as well as to citizens from all parts of the world.
